Racism Remains Prevalent in Football: Anti-Discrimination Charity Report

43% Increase in Reports of Racism in English Football

Nearly Half of Discrimination Reports Related to Racism

Racism continues to be the most pervasive form of discrimination in both professional and grassroots football, according to a report released by an anti-discrimination charity. The report found that reports of racism in English football rose by 43% last season, with 274 incidents reported.

Online racism also remained a significant issue, accounting for nearly half of all reports. The charity's statistics show that reports of racism are the most common type of discrimination in the sport, accounting for 54% of reports.

The report also highlighted a concerning trend in the praise given to visibly black players. The percentage breakdown of 281 praise comments centered on physical attributes (69.8%) and natural ability (10.7%). This suggests that stereotypes and biases may still influence how black players are perceived in football.

The charity called on football authorities and clubs to take decisive action to combat racism and promote inclusivity. It urged them to adopt anti-discrimination policies, implement diversity and inclusion initiatives, and educate players, fans, and staff about the harmful effects of racism.
