The EMSC European Mediterranean Seismological Centre has reported a moderate earthquake in Argentina at 6:17 UTC on January 1, 2021. The quake occurred 63 kilometers west-southwest of San Antonio de los Cobres and had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3.
The EMSC monitors seismic events with magnitudes greater than 5 in the European Mediterranean region. In the past 24 hours, the center has recorded 357 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or greater, including 1710 in the past seven days.
