Newly Discovered Lung Macrophages Key to Post-Viral Recovery

Groundbreaking Discovery Reveals New Role for Immune Cells

University of Liège, August 3, 2024

In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers from the University of Liège have identified a new population of macrophages in the lungs that plays a crucial role in post-viral recovery. These specialized immune cells, like gardeners tending to a storm-damaged garden, work tirelessly to repair damaged lung tissue following viral infections.

The study, published in the prestigious journal "Science," sheds new light on the complex interplay between the immune system and the respiratory system. The researchers found that these newly identified macrophages, known as MARCO+ macrophages, are essential for the clearance of viral debris and the promotion of lung repair.

In an alarming finding, the researchers observed that patients with severe COVID-19 had significantly depleted levels of MARCO+ macrophages in their lung tissue. This suggests that a deficiency of these immune cells may contribute to the severe respiratory complications seen in some COVID-19 cases.
